October 2025

Hook & Odiham RFU led our final litter pick of the season. Again we had an excellent turnout with over 6 full bags of litter collected.

Our thanks to Lions Louise and Colin for managing the litter picks, Lions Neil and Lynn for stepping in when Louise and Colin were not available, and to all the Individuals, Organisations and Clubs that supported the litter picks. In total over 80 people participated in the litter picks collecting over 60 bags of rubbish.

Also a note of thanks to Pam Mercer from Hook Parish Council for posting our events on their social media pages.

The fun starts again next March and hopefully less litter to be collected!

We then moved onto our last summer event at Off The Hook festival in Greywell where we provided free child's games and our ever popular darts game.

Off the Hook 2025

September continued with our monthly litter pick, this time led by Hook United FC. A great turn out with 34 participating and collecting over 11 bags of rubbish.

This was the largest item that we have found to date, a coil of flexible aluminum tubing flytipped in Bartley Way. Many thanks to Hart District Council street cleaning team for removing this item very quickly.

Come on Hook, you can do better than this!

Defibrillator News

With Hook Parish Council we have now commenced with the installation of a defibrillator at Hook Bowls Club in North West Hook. It is anticipated that the works will be completed within the first quarter of 2026. More updates in the next Newsletter.

Prostate Screening

Our next Prostate Cancer Screening will be on Saturday 15th November at the Odiham Cottage Hospital from 10.00 to 14.00. Men aged 40 to 80, who have not been tested within the last 12 months, can register & book a free PSA blood test by visiting holc.mypsatests.org.uk. We are again providing testing for 250 men.

This event is run in partnership with Odiham Cottage Hospital and The Graham Fulford Charitable Trust. We thank Hook Parish Council, Odiham Parish Council, Councillor Jonathan Glen and the Hook Fun Run for grants to help support the screening costs. With the grants, generous donations on the day, we cover the remaining costs through our fundraising during the year. This will be our sixth free screening event.

Training Sessions

In August, we delivered the first of six training sessions on bystander resuscitation and defibrillator awareness in St John's Church Hartley Wintney, the Community Centre Hook and The Bridewell Odiham. These were all well attended with lots of great questions asked and everyone enjoyed having a go at resuscitation technique on the mannequins.

Our goal in offering these classes is to help people become more confident in using CPR and a defibrillator. CPR has changed over the years and Lion Jeni Rees, a qualified Basic Life Support instructor, led the classes with a relaxed and common sense approach on how best to help someone in cardiac arrest.

Wel Medical donated the training defibrillator to us and Sandra Sturgess, their Regional Sales Manager for the South West & Wales, attended the first two sessions that took place in Hartley Wintney to offer her support. We thank her and the company for their generosity as well as the Hook Parish Council for providing the mannequins and the three venues who offered us the rooms for free, allowing us to provide the sessions free of charge. We plan to run more sessions in the future and will advertise these nearer the time.

Litter Pick

August saw the Hook Care Group lead our Hook monthly litter pick keeping Hook clean and litter free.

Presidents Handover

Finally in August we held our annual "President's Handover Social." The Handover Social is where the outgoing President hands over to the incoming President. This year the President handed over to himself! We again thank Lion Graham and his wife, Janice, for staging the event. As usual a great afternoon was had by all.

We also celebrated the birthday of our longest serving and oldest member, Lion Bryan Hailstone who turned 93.

Pictured is Bryan with his wife Brenda at the Handover Social.
